Michaelmas! Angels and Us: Understanding Their Role in God's Plan

When we think of angels, we often picture powerful, majestic beings with shimmering wings. The Bible tells us that these spiritual beings are real and serve a great purpose in God's kingdom. Today, we explore what angels are, what they do, and how they fit into God's story, starting with Psalm 8. The Psalm tells us that while we are currently made a little lower than the angels, God has something greater in store for us.

Throughout the Bible, angels are depicted as messengers, ministering spirits, and celestial guardians, each created to serve God and help His people. Cherubim and seraphim are two major types of angelic beings, described as fearsome and perpetually proclaiming God's holiness. Beyond these, we know of archangels like Michael and angels like Gabriel, who deliver messages, provide guidance, and execute God's judgment.

Angels are powerful and wise, but they are not the focus of God's salvation. Hebrews 1 describes them as ministering spirits sent to serve those who are to inherit salvation. Angels protect and guide us, often without us realizing it. They also worship God, singing praises that we join in our divine services.

However, not all angels serve God. A third of the angels, led by Satan, rebelled and were cast out of heaven, becoming demons. These fallen angels oppose God and seek to harm us, but in Christ, we have nothing to fear. The Spirit of God within us is more powerful than any demon, and Christ's victory ensures our protection.

Ultimately, it is not angels but mankind that holds a special place in God's heart. Through Christ, who was made lower than the angels for a time, we are promised a greater glory. In the world to come, we will share in Christ's dominion over all creation, including angels. Until then, let us be content with the knowledge that angels minister to us, guiding and protecting us as we journey towards the promised land.

As we reflect on the role of angels, let us marvel at God's love for us, His chosen creation, destined to share in His eternal glory. Remember that angels, powerful and wise, serve and protect you, a testament to God's incredible love and grace.

Jesus, invited to this charged atmosphere, is scrutinized by those eager to discredit him. Amidst this, Jesus performs a miraculous healing of a man with dropsy, challenging societal norms and turning the social hierarchy upside down.

Today's gospel brings us beside a grieving widow as she makes her way out of town, following the body of her only son to its grave. Her agony is palpable, having lost both her husband and now her son. Her life, filled with grief, mirrors the pain many of us have felt in losing loved ones.

Yet, piercing through the darkness of her sorrow is the light of Christ. Moved by compassion, Jesus tells her not to weep, touches the coffin, and raises her son from the dead, restoring him to his mother. This miraculous event is a reminder of the hope and resurrection promised to us all.

There is a season for everything, including grief, but it must not overshadow the hope of the gospel. Christ's victory over death assures us that our loved ones who have died in faith are not lost but are with the Lord. The resurrection of the widow's son is a picture of the glorious reunion that awaits us all.

As we visit cemeteries, let us remember they are not the final destination. Our hope is anchored in heaven, secure in Christ. Despite the storms of life, our faith remains steadfast. In Christ, we find shelter and strength, for He has borne all our grief and overcome it. Alleluia, Christ is risen!

Our episode emphasizes that true thanksgiving springs not from the absence of suffering but from recognizing the presence of Christ in our suffering and trusting His redeeming grace.
